In the English tradition of heraldry, coats of arms are held by individuals. Therefore, family members have to distinguish their own heraldic achievements from those of the first generation. A simple method to do this are the marks of cadency. The formally correct marks can be science of its own. For the English tradition, a label of three points is often used for the first son. For the second son, sometimes label of three points are used.
The labels of three and four points are the newest additions to our heraldry tool. Other marks of cadency have already been accessible: The crescent for the second son, the star for the third, the mullet for the fourth, the annulet for the sixth, and so on.
